Mountains, then jungle: pairing a trek with Chitwan
Nepal trekking and a Chitwan safari pair naturally. A few days in the warm lowlands after weeks of altitude is a good way to rest, and the wildlife is a complete change of scene.
- Best order
- Trek first, then Chitwan
- Chitwan stay
- Usually 2 nights after a trek
- From Pokhara
- About 4.5–6 hours by road to Sauraha
- Best seasons
- October–November and March–April
Why the safari works best after the trek
Trekking days are long and often cold. Chitwan sits at roughly 100–800 m in the Terai lowlands, so it is warm, flat and easy on tired legs. Jeep and canoe outings need little effort, and the midday rest is built into every safari day.
Doing the trek first also protects your schedule. Mountain weather and flight delays can push a trek back a day or two; a safari at the end can absorb that, while a safari at the start cannot. Finally, most treks from the Annapurna side finish in Pokhara, which is only about 4.5–6 hours by road from Chitwan.
Sample trek and safari combinations
| Combination | Trek | Then Chitwan | Total trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poon Hill and Chitwan | About 4–5 days from Pokhara, with sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges | Drive Pokhara to Sauraha, 2 nights | Around 10–12 days with Kathmandu |
| Annapurna Base Camp and Chitwan | A longer trek from Pokhara, often 7–12 days depending on route and pace | Drive Pokhara to Sauraha, 2–3 nights | Around 2–3 weeks |
| Everest region and Chitwan | Fly to the Khumbu, trek (Everest Base Camp is typically about two weeks), fly back to Kathmandu | Drive or fly Kathmandu to Chitwan, 2 nights | Around 3 weeks |
Trek lengths vary with route, acclimatization and weather, so treat the ranges as a guide. A trekking specialist should plan the mountain part; we plan the safari to fit around it.
Choosing a trek that leaves time for Chitwan
If you have under two weeks, a short trek from Pokhara such as Poon Hill keeps the trip balanced. It gives classic Himalayan sunrise views without long days at high altitude, and the drive to Chitwan afterwards is straightforward.
Longer treks like Annapurna Base Camp or the Everest region need more time and acclimatization, so plan at least three weeks if you also want Kathmandu and Chitwan. Shorter trips work better with fewer stops: a long trek, a two-night safari and a couple of days in Kathmandu is plenty.
Why trekking and wildlife make a good pair
A trek plus a safari shows two very different sides of the country in one trip. In the mountains you walk through villages, terraced fields and forest toward high peaks. In Chitwan you are in the Terai lowlands, among sal forest, tall grassland and rivers, looking for rhinos, crocodiles and birds.
Culture runs through both. Mountain villages on the trek and Tharu villages around Chitwan have quite different traditions, food and architecture. A Tharu village walk on your first afternoon in Chitwan is an easy way to see the contrast.

Logistics for combining a trek and safari
What to expect on your first day down from the mountains
The change is sudden. Pokhara sits well below the trekking trails, and Chitwan is lower still, so the air feels thick, warm and humid, especially from March onward. Plan an easy first afternoon: a riverside sunset, a village walk or simply a long lunch. Save the dawn canoe ride and jeep safari for the next day, when you have caught up on sleep.
Drink plenty of water, use insect repellent in the evenings, and switch from trekking layers to light, neutral clothing. Keep one warm layer for early jeep drives in December and January.
When trekking and safari seasons overlap
October–November and March–April suit both. Autumn brings clear mountain views and comfortable lowland days. Spring brings warmer trekking and good visibility in Chitwan after the February–March grass-cutting, though April afternoons in the lowlands get hot. December and January trekking is colder, and Chitwan mornings are foggy. Details are in the best time to visit Chitwan.
For a wider cultural and wildlife tour without a trek, the Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan itinerary is the standard loop. To plan a combined trip, send us your trek dates.
