When to go to Chitwan: seasons, weather and wildlife
The best time to visit Chitwan for most travelers is the October to April main season, when the weather is dry and the park is fully open; February and March usually give the best visibility. But every season has trade-offs, and the right month depends on what you want to see.
- Main season
- October to April
- Best visibility
- February–March, after grass-cutting
- Hottest
- April–May, often 35–40 °C in the afternoon
- Coolest mornings
- December–January, can be under 10 °C at dawn
- Monsoon
- June–September; some park areas limited
The short answer
For a first visit, aim for February to April. Local grass-cutting opens up the grasslands, visibility is good and birding is still strong; just be ready for heat by April. October and November are the other good window, with clear skies and pleasant days, though the grass is still tall early in the season.
December and January work well if you dress for cold, foggy mornings. The monsoon, June to September, is the one period most travelers should avoid, unless you want green landscapes and empty lodges and can accept limited safaris.
Chitwan weather by month
Conditions below are for the Sauraha area and are approximate. Weather varies from year to year, and the start and end of the monsoon can shift by a few weeks.
| Month | Weather | Wildlife & conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Cool, foggy mornings, can be under 10 °C at dawn; mild days around 20–24 °C | Winter migrant birds present; fog can delay early sightings until it lifts | Good, with warm layers |
| February | Cool mornings, pleasant days | Grass-cutting begins to open the grasslands; migrants still around; good birding | Excellent |
| March | Warm and pleasant | Open grasslands and good visibility; rhinos often easy to spot | Excellent |
| April | Hot; afternoons can reach 35–40 °C | Animals gather near water; dawn and late-afternoon outings best; birding still good | Very good if you handle heat |
| May | Hot, often 35–40 °C by afternoon; humid before the rains | Animals stay close to water; midday activity is hard work | Good for wildlife, tough in the heat |
| June | Monsoon arrives; heavy rain and high humidity | Rivers rise, leeches appear, some routes start to close or are limited | Quiet; limited |
| July | Monsoon, heavy rain | Some park areas and safari routes closed or limited; very green | Not ideal |
| August | Monsoon, heavy rain | Rivers high; leeches; few visitors | Not ideal |
| September | Monsoon, heavy rain | Some routes still limited; landscape very green | Not ideal; check conditions |
| October | Clear skies after the monsoon; days around 25–30 °C | Grass still tall early in the season, so wildlife can be harder to spot; busy | Very good |
| November | Clear, dry; days around 25–30 °C | Winter migrant birds start arriving; grass still tall in places | Very good |
| December | Cool, foggy mornings; mild days around 20–24 °C | Migrant birds; quieter than autumn; fog on early drives | Good, with warm layers |
What each season is like
Autumn (October–November): clear skies, tall grass
After the monsoon the air clears, the landscape is green and days are warm rather than hot. It’s a very popular time to travel in Nepal, so Chitwan is busy. The catch is the grass: elephant grass can grow well over head height, and early in the season it hides a lot. Sightings improve as the weeks go on.
Winter (December–January): cold dawns and fog
Chitwan in January and December means foggy mornings that can be under 10 °C, then mild, sunny days around 20–24 °C. Early jeep drives are cold in an open vehicle, so bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves. Fog can make the first hour of a safari atmospheric but limited. Migrant birds make this a good time for birders.
Late winter and spring (February–March): the sweet spot
Local communities cut the tall grass in this period, which opens up the grasslands and gives better views. Temperatures are pleasant, birds are still plentiful, and the park is fully open. If you have a free choice of dates, this is when we’d suggest going.
Pre-monsoon (April–May): hot, but animals come to water
Afternoons often reach 35–40 °C. Wildlife concentrates around rivers, oxbow lakes and water holes, which can make it easier to find, but the middle of the day is for resting. Plan dawn and late-afternoon outings, drink plenty of water and choose a lodge with good fans or air-conditioning.
Monsoon (June–September): green, wet and quiet
Chitwan in monsoon is very different. Heavy rain, high rivers and leeches are the norm, and some park areas and safari routes close or are limited. Roads from Kathmandu and Pokhara can be delayed by landslides. In return, the landscape is lush and there are few visitors. Go only with flexible plans and modest expectations.
