Private tour or shared group: what changes

Shared (group) safariYou share the jeep, canoe and guide with other guests on fixed departure times. Good value and sociable, but the pace and stops are set for everyone.Best for: Budget travelers and solo visitors
Private Chitwan tourYour own guide and jeep, flexible start times, and stops where you want them. Transfers can be by private car or flight. Costs more per person, less so as the party grows.Best for: Families, couples, photographers, groups

A private jeep safari is the change people notice most. You decide when to wait at a waterhole, when to turn back, and whether to go out at the first permitted hour. The park’s rules on routes and timings still apply to everyone.

What you can tailor on a private trip

Timings:first outing at the earliest permitted hour, or a late start after a long drive.
Activity mix:more jeep time, more river time, a dedicated birding morning or a canoe ride at dusk.
Length of outings:half-day drives for young children, full-day drives for keen wildlife watchers.
Lodge area:busy, convenient Sauraha, or a quieter buffer-zone village further west.
Transport:private car door to door, or a flight to Bharatpur with a private transfer.
Meals and pace:rest days, early dinners for children, packed breakfasts for dawn starts.

Chitwan family safari and travel with kids

Private trips suit families because you can keep outings short and plan around meals and naps. Jeep safaris, canoe rides, the Khorsor elephant breeding centre and Tharu village walks all work for children. Walking safaris are not suitable for young children, so we leave them out or arrange them for older family members only.

Bring sun protection, insect repellent and warm layers for winter mornings. For safety on the river, in the jeep and around wildlife, read Chitwan safety for families.

  1. Day 1: arrive and settle inPrivate car or flight, lunch at the lodge, then an easy village walk or visit to the Tharu Cultural Museum and sunset by the river.
  2. Day 2: river morning, jeep afternoonA short canoe ride and a visit to the Khorsor breeding centre, a long midday break, then a half-day jeep safari returning before dark.
  3. Day 3: relaxed departureA late breakfast, an optional cycle or short drive, then the private transfer onward.

Chitwan honeymoon and couple tours

Couples often want quieter time rather than more activities. A private program can include a sunset canoe or riverside evening, a lodge away from the busiest part of Sauraha, and late starts on one or two days. For more comfort and seclusion, see the Chitwan luxury safari options on the park’s west side.

Private trips for photographers and birders

Photographers benefit from a private jeep more than anyone. You can sit at a spot for longer, position the vehicle for light and keep the group quiet. Birders can ask for a guide with strong birding knowledge and plan early mornings around riverbanks and wetlands. See bird watching in Chitwan for seasons and species.

Group tours and solo travel

Friends, extended families and school or interest groups can book the whole program privately. Larger parties use more than one jeep, as each carries roughly 6–8 guests, and walking groups are split so each has its own pair of guides.

Solo travelers can choose either. Shared activities keep costs down and give company; a private guide gives more flexibility and is a good choice for a first visit to Nepal.

How to plan a private Chitwan safari

Start with the number of nights. Two nights suits most private trips; three nights suits photographers and birders. Then decide on the base: Sauraha for convenience and choice, or a west-side village for quiet. Finally, choose transport, which on a private trip is often the biggest single cost after the lodge.

Send us the ages of everyone traveling, any mobility needs, and what each person most wants to see or do. We will build a draft program around that and adjust it until it fits. The 2 nights, 3 days package is a useful starting template, and live prices for private tours from Kathmandu and Pokhara appear on this page.

Remember that park rules apply to private and shared trips alike. Routes, entry times and guide requirements are set by the park, so a private jeep gives you more flexibility within those rules, not outside them.

Private Chitwan tour from Kathmandu or Pokhara

Private transfers save time and stress. A car from Kathmandu takes about 5–7 hours and from Pokhara about 4.5–6 hours, with stops when you want them. Flying from Kathmandu to Bharatpur takes about 20–25 minutes, then about 30 minutes by road to Sauraha. Compare options on Kathmandu to Chitwan and Pokhara to Chitwan, then send us your dates.

Questions people ask

How much more does a private Chitwan safari cost?
A private trip costs more than a shared one because the jeep, guide and transfers are not split with other guests. The difference per person shrinks as your party grows, and for a group of four to six a private jeep can be good value. Live prices appear on the tour pages, and our safari cost guide explains the parts.
Is Chitwan good for kids?
Yes, with sensible choices. Jeep safaris, canoe rides, the elephant breeding centre and village walks are popular with children, and rhinos and deer are often seen. Walking safaris are not suitable for young children. A private trip lets you shorten outings and plan around meals and rest.
Is Chitwan a good honeymoon destination?
It works well as part of a Nepal honeymoon, usually for two or three nights between Kathmandu and Pokhara. Couples tend to enjoy a quieter lodge, a private jeep, a sunset by the river and slower mornings. Higher-end lodges on the west side of the park offer more seclusion.
Can a solo traveler book a private Chitwan tour?
Yes. Solo travelers can book a private guide and jeep, or join shared activities to keep costs down. Many solo visitors mix the two: shared jeep or canoe outings to meet other travelers, and a private guide for a walk or birding morning.
