How much a Chitwan safari costs, item by item

A Chitwan safari cost is the sum of a few clear parts: park fees, guides, activities, your room, meals and getting there. This guide explains each part, what pushes the total up or down, and how to compare quotes without surprises.

What you actually pay for on a Chitwan trip

Most quotes bundle the same building blocks. Some are fixed fees set by the park, some depend on the lodge you choose, and some depend on how many people share a vehicle. Knowing the parts makes it much easier to see why two quotes differ.

Park entry is the one fee you can check yourself, and it is the same whoever books it. The other lines vary with your choices, which is where most of the difference between a lean trip and a comfortable one comes from.

How the Chitwan National Park entrance fee works

The fee is charged per person for each day you enter the national park, not per activity. A full-day jeep drive and a morning walk on the same day usually count as one day’s entry; activities on two different days usually mean two fees. Ask how your quote handles this.

Buffer-zone community forests such as Baghmara and Kumrose run their own jeep drives, walks and canoe put-ins with lower entry fees. These forests sit right beside Sauraha and hold rhinos, deer and plenty of birds, so they are a sensible way to keep costs down on a short stay. The jeep safari guide explains how the routes differ.

Shared or private jeep: the biggest single choice

Shared jeepYou buy a seat in a jeep of roughly 6–8 guests. The route and timing are fixed, and the cost per person is lower.Best for: Solo travelers, couples and anyone watching their budget
Private jeepYou pay for the whole vehicle and guide. You can stop longer at a waterhole, start earlier and set the pace for photography or children.Best for: Families, photographers and groups of four or more

For a group of five or six, a private jeep can cost about the same per head as shared seats, so it is worth asking for both. The private safari options page covers what else changes when you go private.

What makes a Chitwan trip cheaper or more expensive

Lodge level.Simple guesthouses, mid-range hotels and higher-end lodges are priced very differently. See where to stay in Chitwan for how areas compare.
Getting there.A tourist bus is the cheapest way in, a private car costs more but saves time, and a flight to Bharatpur plus a transfer usually costs the most. The travel options to Chitwan are compared in detail.
Shared vs private.Private jeeps, private guides and private transfers add up quickly.
Number of days inside the park. Each extra park day adds another entry fee.
Activity mix.A canoe ride and a half-day jeep cost less than a full-day jeep or full-day walk with two guides.
Season.October to April is busy. In the monsoon some routes close, and rooms can be easier to find.
Group size.Shared costs such as a private vehicle drop per person as the group grows.

Budget for Chitwan at three comfort levels

We don’t put numbers here because lodge rates and transport fares move, and the live package prices on this site are updated directly. Instead, here is what each level usually looks like.

BudgetTourist bus to Sauraha, a simple guesthouse with fan or basic air conditioning, shared jeep or community forest drive, canoe ride, meals in local restaurants.Best for: Backpackers and short stays of one or two nights
Mid-rangeComfortable hotel with air conditioning and a garden or pool, package with full board, a mix of shared and private activities, private car or tourist bus.Best for: Most first-time visitors and families
Higher-endLodge in a quieter buffer-zone village, private guiding and jeep, longer full-day drives, private transfers or a flight to Bharatpur. The luxury safari page shows what this level includes.Best for: Couples, photographers and travelers short on time

Your length of stay matters as much as the level. Two nights let you fit the main activities without paying for a rushed private schedule; the how many days guide explains the trade-offs.

How to compare Chitwan tour package prices fairly

A low headline price can hide missing fees, and a higher one can include things you would otherwise pay for on the spot. Before comparing two quotes, check each of these points.

  • Are national park and community forest entry fees included, and for how many days?
  • Is the jeep shared or private, and is it a half-day or full-day drive?
  • Is a licensed nature guide included for every activity, and two guides for walks?
  • Which meals are included: full board, half board or breakfast only?
  • Is transport to and from Chitwan included, and by bus, car or flight?
  • Is VAT included in the price shown?
  • What is the cancellation policy, and are there payment-processing fees?
  • How many people share activities, and is there a maximum group size?

Tips, cash and small extra costs

Tipping guides and drivers is customary in Nepal and is at your discretion. Give it directly to the person, in cash, at the end of an activity or your stay. Carry some Nepali rupees for tips, drinks, snacks and small purchases, because card acceptance varies.

Other small extras include bottled or refilled water, laundry, a Tharu cultural program ticket and a bicycle for the villages. Current package prices are listed below, each with its inclusions shown on the tour page.

Questions people ask

How much does a Chitwan jungle safari cost?
It depends on how many nights you stay, your lodge level, whether activities are shared or private and how you travel to Chitwan. Fixed costs are park entry, at approx. NPR 2,000 per person per day plus VAT for foreign visitors (check current rates), and a licensed guide. Current package prices on this site are shown live on each tour page, with inclusions listed.
What is the Chitwan National Park entrance fee for foreigners?
For foreign visitors it is approx. NPR 2,000 per person per day plus VAT. Visitors from SAARC countries pay less, and Nepali citizens less again. Rates are set by the park and change from time to time, so check current rates before you travel. Buffer-zone community forests charge their own, lower fees.
Is a shared jeep safari much cheaper than a private one?
Per person, yes, for solo travelers and couples, because you pay for one seat in a jeep that carries roughly 6–8 guests. A private jeep is charged per vehicle, so the price per person falls as your group grows. For five or six people the difference can be small, and you gain control over timing and stops.
Can I do Chitwan on a tight budget?
Yes. Take the tourist bus, stay in a simple guesthouse in Sauraha, use a community forest jeep drive or a shared park jeep, and add a canoe ride. Eating in local restaurants keeps meal costs low. Avoid adding extra park days you don’t need, since each one carries another entry fee.
Are park fees included in Chitwan package prices?
In most packages they are, but not always, and the number of park days covered varies. Check the inclusions list on the tour page or confirmation before you compare prices. Our tour pages list what is and isn’t included so you can see the full cost before booking.
How much should I tip a nature guide in Chitwan?
There is no fixed amount and it is your choice. Many travelers tip each guide and driver at the end of an activity or at the end of their stay, more for a full-day walk than for a short canoe ride. Hand it over in Nepali rupees directly to the person, rather than leaving it with the lodge.
