What to see in Kathmandu and Pokhara

In Kathmandu, one full day covers the main heritage sites if you start early. Durbar Square has the old royal palace and temple courtyards; Swayambhunath sits on a hill above the city with wide views; Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the region and busiest around dusk; Pashupatinath is Nepal’s most important Hindu temple complex on the Bagmati River. Bhaktapur, a well-preserved old town east of the city, deserves its own half day or more.

Pokhara is slower. Phewa Lake is the center of town life, with boats for hire and a lakeside path. Sarangkot is the classic sunrise viewpoint over the Annapurna range, and the World Peace Pagoda on the ridge across the lake gives views back over the water. Mountain views are clearest from October to December.

Best season for the golden triangle

October to April is the best window. Autumn has clear skies in the hills and comfortable days in Chitwan, while February and March bring good visibility in the park after the grass-cutting. Winter is cold in Kathmandu mornings and foggy at dawn in Chitwan, but rarely a problem. April and May are hot in the lowlands, and the June–September monsoon limits some safari routes and often hides the mountains.

Stretching the trip to 8 or 10 days

How to extend the golden triangle tour
LengthWhat to addWhy
7 daysBase program aboveCovers the main sights with two nights in each place
8 daysOne more day in Kathmandu for Bhaktapur, or a third night in ChitwanLess rushing around the heritage sites, or a full-day jeep drive
10 daysBhaktapur day, third Chitwan night and an extra day or two in PokharaTime for birding or a walking safari, and a short hike or rest day in Pokhara
10 days (variation)Add Lumbini between Chitwan and PokharaThe Buddha’s birthplace is about 4–5 hours from Sauraha by car

A third night in Chitwan is the most useful single addition for wildlife; the 3 nights, 4 days package shows how it is used.

Kathmandu to Chitwan to Pokhara, or Pokhara first?

Kathmandu → Chitwan → PokharaDrives are split into two similar legs, and you end in relaxed Pokhara before flying back. The safari comes early, while you still have energy for dawn starts.Best for: Most first-time visitors
Kathmandu → Pokhara → ChitwanPuts the mountains first and lets you rest in the warm lowlands at the end, which suits trekkers. The return from Chitwan to Kathmandu is a long road day, or a flight from Bharatpur.Best for: Trekkers and winter travelers

Some travelers go Pokhara, Chitwan, Kathmandu when they arrive in Nepal overland or start in Pokhara after a trek. Route details are on the Kathmandu to Chitwan and Pokhara to Chitwan pages.

Bus, private car or flights between the three

Tourist buses are the cheapest and leave in the morning. A private car costs more but lets you stop for lunch and views, and leave when your safari ends. Flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara or Bharatpur save a day of road travel on the return leg. Many travelers use road for the two short legs and fly back to Kathmandu at the end. Whatever you choose, avoid booking an international flight on the same day as a long drive.

Questions people ask

Is 7 days enough for Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan?
Yes, for the main sights. Seven days gives two nights in Chitwan and enough time for Kathmandu’s heritage sites and Pokhara’s lake and viewpoints. It is a busy week with two long road days, so eight or ten days feels more relaxed.
What is the Nepal golden triangle tour?
It is the name often given to a loop through Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara, Nepal’s three most visited destinations for first-time travelers. It combines temples and old towns, a wildlife safari and a lake town with mountain views, usually in 7 to 10 days.
Should I fly or drive between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan?
Most travelers drive the Kathmandu to Chitwan and Chitwan to Pokhara legs, as they are manageable and scenic, and fly the return from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Flying to Bharatpur from Kathmandu is useful if you are short on time, and saves about a day of road travel overall.
Can I add Lumbini to a Kathmandu Pokhara Chitwan tour?
Yes. Lumbini is about 4–5 hours from Sauraha by car via Butwal and Narayangarh, so it fits between Chitwan and Pokhara or as a final stop. Gautam Buddha International Airport at Bhairahawa is close by if you want to fly out from there. Allow about ten days.
