Choosing a base for your Chitwan stay

Where to stay in Chitwan comes down to one question: do you want to be in Sauraha, with everything within walking distance, or in a quieter village on the edge of the park? This guide compares each area so you can pick the one that fits your trip.

Why no one sleeps inside Chitwan National Park

Lodges once operated inside the park, but the government closed them in 2012 to reduce pressure on wildlife and habitat. Today all Chitwan National Park accommodation is outside the core area, in Sauraha and other buffer-zone villages.

That is less of a loss than it sounds. Many lodges sit at the forest edge or on the riverbank, and rhinos and deer regularly wander into buffer-zone fields and community forests. A lodge that calls itself a “jungle resort” is in the buffer zone, not inside the national park.

Sauraha hotels and accommodation: the easy choice

Sauraha sits on the north bank of the Rapti, facing the park across the river. Most tourist buses stop here, most activities start within a few minutes of town, and you can walk to the riverbank for sunset. Rooms range from simple guesthouses to comfortable hotels with pools.

Staying here also makes independent plans easy. You can walk to the Tharu Cultural Museum, hire a bicycle for the villages, or wander to the river at dusk without arranging transport. For a short stay, that saved time often matters more than a quieter setting.

The downside is that central Sauraha can feel busy from October to April, with music from riverside bars on some evenings. Lanes a little away from the main strip are quieter. Our Sauraha guide covers the village itself in more detail.

Quieter buffer-zone villages near the park

The Bagmara and Kumrose side keeps you close to the action with far less traffic. Community forests here run their own jeep drives and walks, and lodges tend to be smaller, often with gardens backing onto fields where wildlife passes at dusk.

The western villages of Meghauli, Amaltari, Barauli and the Kasara side feel more remote. Lodges here are fewer and mostly lodge-based, so meals, guides and activities usually come as a package. Many of the higher-end jungle lodges in Chitwan are on this side; the luxury safari page explains what that level includes.

Is Bharatpur a good place to stay?

Bharatpur is useful for one night if you land late or fly out early, since the airport is about 15 km from Sauraha. For a safari stay it is less practical: you lose time on the road before each dawn activity, and there is no forest-edge atmosphere.

How to choose the right base for your trip

One night:stay in Sauraha. You will not want to spend time on transfers.
Two nights:Sauraha or the Bagmara and Kumrose side both work well.
Three nights or more:consider a western village for a calmer, lodge-based stay, or split nights between areas.
Arriving by tourist bus:Sauraha is simplest, as most buses stop nearby.
Traveling by private car:any area works, and the western villages become easy to reach.
Focused on birding:the western side and quieter villages give early access to river and forest edges with fewer people around.
Traveling with children:look for a garden and pool, and a short drive to activities. The safety and family guide has more tips.

Most packages include rooms, so the lodge level is often the main thing that separates one package from another. The safari cost guide explains how room choice affects your total.

What to expect from rooms in Chitwan

Air conditioning matters from April to June, when afternoons are very hot; in December and January, ask about hot water and extra blankets for cold, foggy mornings. Mosquito nets or screened windows are worth checking in any season.

Rooms near the river have the best views but can be the busiest at sunset. Wi-Fi exists in most hotels but can be slow in rural lodges. If a quiet night matters, ask for a room away from the road and the main garden.

Lodges at the forest edge are part of the wildlife’s world. Keep doors closed at night, don’t walk unlit garden paths alone after dark, and follow staff advice if a rhino or wild elephant is nearby.

Our 2 nights 3 days package uses a comfortable base close to the main activity points; its current price and inclusions appear below.

Questions people ask

Can you stay inside Chitwan National Park?
No. The government closed the lodges inside the park in 2012. All hotels and lodges are now in the buffer zone around it, mainly in Sauraha and villages such as Bagmara, Meghauli, Amaltari, Barauli and the Kasara side. Many sit right at the forest edge, and wildlife often passes close by.
Is Sauraha the best area to stay in Chitwan?
For most first-time visitors, yes. It has the widest range of hotels, restaurants and services, tourist buses stop nearby, and most activities start within minutes of town. If you want more quiet, look at the villages next to it or the western buffer zone, accepting longer transfers.
Are there luxury hotels in Chitwan?
Yes. There are higher-end lodges in Sauraha and in the quieter western villages, usually sold with meals, private guiding and activities included. Expect fewer rooms, more space and more personal service rather than city-style luxury. Our luxury safari page describes what that level of trip usually includes.
Should I stay in Bharatpur or Sauraha?
Stay in Sauraha for a safari. Bharatpur is a city about 30 minutes away by road, which means extra driving before each early-morning activity. It makes sense only for a late arrival or an early flight from Bharatpur Airport, which is about 15 km from Sauraha. Even then, many travelers prefer to stay in Sauraha and take a short transfer.
Do Chitwan jungle lodges include meals and activities?
Many do, especially on the western side, where there are few independent restaurants nearby. In Sauraha some hotels sell rooms only and others include meals and activities in a package. Always check what is included, such as park fees, guides and transfers, before comparing prices, since a cheaper room-only rate can end up costing more.
