Chitwan safari packages: choosing the right length

Most Chitwan tour packages bundle a lodge, meals, a licensed nature guide, park fees and a set of safari activities into one price. The main decision is length: a day, one, two or three nights.

What is included in a Chitwan package

A standard Chitwan jungle safari package covers accommodation in a buffer-zone lodge, meals during your stay, a licensed nature guide for activities inside the park, and the activities listed in the program. Park entry fees are usually included, but check the tour page, because some packages list them separately.

Typical activities are a jeep safari, a dugout canoe ride on the Rapti, a guided jungle walk, a Tharu village walk and an evening cultural program. Longer packages add a full-day jeep drive, dedicated birding or a night in a community-forest watchtower.

Usually included:lodge room, meals in Chitwan, nature guide, listed activities, park and community-forest entry.
Sometimes included:transport to and from Kathmandu or Pokhara (by tourist bus, private car or flight).
Usually not included:drinks, tips, travel insurance, personal expenses and extra activities you add on the spot.

How the day tour and 1, 2 and 3 night packages compare

Time in Chitwan is shorter than it looks on paper. Arrival day usually starts in the early afternoon after a 5–7 hour drive from Kathmandu, and departure day often ends after breakfast. The table shows what fits realistically.

Which length suits your Nepal trip

If Chitwan is one stop on a Kathmandu and Pokhara loop, two nights is the usual answer. You get a full day in the park without losing too much of the rest of your trip. One night works when time is short, but it leaves little room for weather, a slow jeep morning or simply resting after the road.

Three nights make sense if wildlife is the main reason you came. Tigers are rare to see, and every extra outing in the park improves your chances of good rhino, bird and deer sightings. Our guide on how many days to spend in Chitwan goes through the trade-offs in more detail.

Where Chitwan packages are based

Lodges inside the park were closed in 2012, so every package stays in a buffer-zone village. Most standard packages use Sauraha, on the north bank of the Rapti River. It has the widest range of lodges, easy access to canoe put-ins and community forests, and cafés and riverside sunsets within walking distance.

Quieter villages such as Meghauli, Amaltari and Barauli sit further west, closer to the Narayani River. They mostly host higher-end lodges with their own naturalists and fewer vehicles around. Packages based there usually need a private transfer rather than a tourist bus.

Shared activities or a private guide

Standard packages often share the jeep and canoe with other guests on fixed departure times, which keeps costs down. Jeeps carry roughly 6–8 guests, and walks go out with two licensed guides. If you want your own vehicle and timings, almost any package can be run privately for an extra cost.

Private and higher-end versions

Any of these lengths can be run privately, with your own guide, vehicle and timings. That suits families, couples and photographers who want to set the pace. See private Chitwan safaris for how tailoring works.

For quieter lodges, private naturalists and more comfortable transfers, the luxury safari page explains what changes and where the higher-end lodges are.

What drives the price of a Chitwan tour package

Live prices for each tour appear on this page from our booking system. What moves a price up or down is fairly predictable, and the Chitwan safari cost guide breaks the parts down.

Lodge category:simple guesthouse, mid-range resort or higher-end lodge.
Shared or private:a private jeep and guide cost more than sharing with other guests.
Transport:tourist bus, private car or a flight to Bharatpur.
Activities:a full-day jeep drive costs more than a half-day one.
Park fees:foreign visitors pay approx. NPR 2,000 per person per day plus VAT for the national park; check current rates.
Group size and season:larger groups share fixed costs; peak months fill lodges first.

Questions people ask

What is the best Chitwan safari package for first-time visitors?
For most first-time visitors, 2 nights and 3 days is the best fit. It gives one full day for a jeep safari plus time for a canoe ride, a guided walk and a Tharu village visit, without rushing. One night is possible but leaves little margin, and three nights mainly suits people who are focused on wildlife or birds.
Are park entry fees included in Chitwan packages?
Usually, yes, but not always. Check the inclusions on each tour page. National park entry for foreign visitors is approx. NPR 2,000 per person per day plus VAT, and community-forest fees are lower. Rates change, so check current rates if you are booking activities separately.
Do Chitwan packages include transport from Kathmandu or Pokhara?
Some do and some start in Sauraha. Packages that start in Kathmandu or Pokhara include either a tourist bus seat or a private car; the tour page says which. Packages that start in Sauraha suit travelers who are arranging their own transport or are already in Chitwan.
Can I change the activities in a package?
Yes, within reason. Common swaps are a full-day jeep safari instead of a half-day one, a birding morning instead of a village walk, or adding a jungle tower night. Tell us when you book, because some changes affect the price and park permits are arranged per activity.
When is the best time to book a Chitwan package?
October to April is the main season, and lodges in Sauraha fill first around October, November and the winter holidays. Booking a few weeks ahead is usually enough outside those peaks. During the June–September monsoon some park routes close or are limited, so programs are shorter and more flexible.
