A night in a jungle watchtower in Chitwan

A Chitwan jungle tower night stay swaps your lodge room for a simple watchtower, or machan, in a buffer-zone community forest. You spend the evening and dawn listening and watching. It is basic, quiet and very different from a hotel night.

What a machan in Chitwan is

A machan is a raised watchtower, usually built of wood or concrete on stilts, overlooking a waterhole, grassland or forest clearing. Several community forests around Sauraha have towers used for wildlife watching by day and, in some cases, for overnight stays.

Because lodges inside the national park closed in 2012, a tower night in the buffer zone is one of the few ways to spend a night out in the jungle rather than in a village. You are not inside Chitwan National Park itself, but animals move freely across the boundary.

What an overnight in the jungle in Chitwan is like

  1. Afternoon departureLeave Sauraha in the afternoon by jeep or on foot with your guide, often combined with a short drive or walk on the way.
  2. Settle in before duskArrive at the tower with time to set up bedding and get used to the space while it is still light.
  3. Dusk watchThe hour around sunset is often the most active. Deer, wild boar and sometimes rhinos come to water or open ground.
  4. Dinner and the nightA simple packed or prepared dinner, then long hours of darkness. You listen for alarm calls, owls, jackals and movement in the grass.
  5. Dawn watchWake before sunrise for another active period as mist lifts off the grass.
  6. ReturnWalk or drive back to Sauraha for breakfast and a shower.

Sightings at night are limited by darkness, and spotlighting animals is not appropriate. The experience is mostly about sound and atmosphere, with dusk and dawn giving the best chances to see animals.

Facilities: what to expect and what not to

Be clear about this before you book: a jungle tower night is not luxury. Expect simple mattresses or bedding on the floor of an enclosed or partly enclosed room, limited or no electricity, and toilet facilities that may be a basic outhouse at the base of the tower or none at all.

  • No hot showers; you return to your lodge in the morning.
  • Limited lighting; bring a headlamp with a red-light mode.
  • Mosquitoes and insects are common; nets may be provided, but bring repellent.
  • Phone signal may be weak or absent.
  • Meals are simple and brought in for the night.

Safety at a community forest tower stay

The tower keeps you off the ground, and that is the main safety measure. Stay inside after dark, do not climb down without your guide, and follow every instruction about moving around the base, especially for toilet trips at night.

Rhinos, wild boar and occasionally larger predators can pass close to towers. That is part of the appeal, and also why guides stay with you. Our Chitwan safety guide covers wider health and family questions.

Who a jungle tower night suits

Good fitTravelers who enjoy camping, nature sounds and simple conditions, and who are happy to trade comfort for atmosphere. Couples and small groups of friends often enjoy it most.Best for: Adventurous adults, second or third night in Chitwan
Probably not for youAnyone who needs reliable bathrooms, has mobility issues with ladders or steep stairs, or is traveling with young children. Light sleepers should expect a broken night.Best for: Choose a lodge night and a dawn jeep drive instead

A tower night works best as one night within a longer stay, with comfortable lodge nights either side. Our guide to where to stay helps you choose the base, and how many days to spend helps you plan the rest.

When to go and what to bring for the jungle tower night

October to March is the most comfortable period. December and January nights are cold and damp, so bring warm layers even if days are mild. April and May nights are warm and buggy. During the June–September monsoon, tower stays may not run.

  • Headlamp with spare batteries and a red-light setting.
  • Warm layer or fleece, and a light sleeping bag liner.
  • Insect repellent, long sleeves and long trousers.
  • Water, snacks, any medication and a small towel.
  • Binoculars and a power bank for your phone.

Fitting a tower night into your Chitwan trip

Because you sleep lightly and return early, the day after a tower night is best kept easy. A common pattern is a jeep or canoe outing on the first day, the tower night on the second, and a relaxed morning followed by onward travel on the third.

Tower stays depend on community forest permissions, season and how many people are already booked, so they are not available every night. Book ahead, especially from October to December, and keep a backup plan in case weather or local rules change the schedule.

  • Plan at least two nights in Chitwan if you want to add a tower night.
  • Keep your lodge room or store luggage there so you return to a shower.
  • Avoid a tower night immediately before a long bus journey; the early tourist buses leave around 7:00 a.m.

Questions people ask

Is a jungle tower night in Chitwan safe?
Yes, when you follow your guide. The tower raises you above ground level, and licensed guides stay with the group. The main rules are to stay in the tower after dark, never climb down alone and follow instructions for any trips to the toilet. Animals may pass close by, which is part of the experience.
Will I see animals from the machan at night?
You may see deer, wild boar or a rhino at dusk and dawn, which are the most active times. At night you mostly hear rather than see: alarm calls, owls and movement in the grass. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the experience is as much about atmosphere as viewing.
Are there toilets and showers at the jungle tower?
Facilities are basic. Some towers have a simple outhouse at the base, others have very little, and there are no showers. You return to your lodge in the morning to wash. If good bathroom facilities matter to you, a lodge night with a dawn safari is a better choice.
Can children do a jungle tower night stay?
Older children who are comfortable with camping-style conditions, ladders and a quiet night may enjoy it, with an adult close by at all times. It is not suitable for young children. Families with small children usually prefer a lodge stay with a jeep drive and canoe ride.
