What fits into a 2 day Chitwan tour

On a two-day tour, day one is mostly travel. Buses from Kathmandu or Pokhara reach Sauraha in the early afternoon, which leaves time to check in, eat and take a short walk. Day two is your main wildlife window: an early start in the park, then lunch and the road again.

That gives one proper safari outing. Most programs use it for a jeep safari or for a canoe ride followed by a guided walk, depending on season and your preference. The afternoon of day one is not wasted, though: the Tharu villages, the riverside at sunset and the evening dance program give a real sense of life on the park edge.

Sample program for one night in Chitwan

  1. Day 1, morning: travel to SaurahaTourist bus from Kathmandu (about 5–7 hours) or Pokhara (about 4.5–6 hours), both leaving around 7:00–7:30 a.m. A private car or a 20–25 minute flight to Bharatpur shortens the day.
  2. Day 1, afternoon: Tharu village walkAfter check-in and lunch, walk through a nearby Tharu village with your guide, or visit the Tharu Cultural Museum in Sauraha.
  3. Day 1, evening: sunset and stick danceWatch the sun go down from the Rapti riverbank, then attend an evening Tharu stick-dance program before dinner.
  4. Day 2, early morning: safariEither a half-day jeep safari of about 3–4 hours, or a 45–60 minute canoe ride on the Rapti followed by a guided jungle walk. Some programs add a short stop at the elephant breeding centre at Khorsor.
  5. Day 2, late morning: departBreakfast or brunch, then the late-morning bus or car onward to Kathmandu, Pokhara or Lumbini.

Is one night in Chitwan enough?

It is enough for a first taste. Most visitors on a two-day trip see rhinos, spotted deer, monkeys and a good range of birds, and the village and riverside evening give a feel for life on the park edge. It is not enough for a full-day jeep drive deeper into the park, and with only one outing your chances of rarer animals are limited. Tigers are rare to see on any length of stay.

If you can add a night, the 2 nights, 3 days package gives you a full, unhurried day in the park. Our page on how many days to spend in Chitwan compares the options.

Getting there and onward

Because so much of a short stay is travel, the transport choice matters. Tourist buses are the simplest and cheapest; a private car lets you leave when the safari ends; flights to Bharatpur cut the Kathmandu leg to under half an hour plus about 30 minutes by road. Compare routes on the Kathmandu to Chitwan and Pokhara to Chitwan pages.

Choosing between the jeep and the canoe and walk

With one safari outing, the choice matters. A half-day jeep drive covers more ground and gives the best general chances of rhinos and deer. It suits families and anyone who wants to see as much as possible in a few hours.

The canoe and walk combination is slower and quieter. You drift past birds and mugger crocodiles on the river, then walk back through forest and grassland with two guides, reading tracks and listening for alarm calls. It is the better pick for birders and people who want to be on foot. Walking safaris are not suitable for young children. Our jungle walk page explains how they work.

What the 1 night package usually includes

  • One night in a Sauraha lodge with dinner, breakfast and usually lunch on one or both days.
  • A licensed nature guide for activities inside the park.
  • Village walk, sunset visit, cultural program and one morning safari activity.
  • Park or community-forest entry for the listed activity; check each tour’s inclusions.
  • Transport from Kathmandu or Pokhara in some versions; land-only versions start in Sauraha.

Making a short stay work

  • Leave Kathmandu or Pokhara on the earliest bus or car, so you have the full afternoon in Sauraha.
  • Go to bed early: the safari usually starts around dawn, and the first hours are often the best.
  • Pack the night before, so you can leave straight after the morning activity.
  • If you are flying, choose a mid-afternoon flight from Bharatpur rather than a morning one.

Season notes for a short stay

From October to March, mornings are pleasant, though December and January dawns can be foggy and cold, so bring a warm layer for an early jeep. February and March are a good time for short visits because grass-cutting opens up the grasslands. In April and May the afternoons are very hot, so the morning outing matters more. During the monsoon some routes close; see the best time to visit for details.

Questions people ask

What can you do in Chitwan in 2 days?
In two days you can usually fit a Tharu village walk, a riverside sunset and an evening cultural program on arrival, then one safari outing the next morning: either a half-day jeep safari or a canoe ride with a guided walk. A full-day jeep drive does not fit unless you arrive the evening before.
Will I see a rhino on a 1 night Chitwan safari?
There are no guarantees, but most visitors see one-horned rhinos, often in the grassland or wallowing near water. Chitwan had 694 of Nepal’s 752 rhinos in the 2021 count. Your chances are better on an early-morning outing and in the drier months when grass is shorter.
Is a Chitwan 2 day tour worth it from Kathmandu?
It is worth it if your schedule has no more room, but expect a long travel day at each end. A flight to Bharatpur or a private car makes it more comfortable. If you can find one more night, a three-day trip gives a much better ratio of park time to road time.
Can children join the 1 night 2 days package?
Yes. Jeep safaris, canoe rides, village walks and the cultural program all work for children. Walking safaris are not suitable for young children, so families normally take the jeep option on the second morning. Our safety guide covers the details for families.
